Smartphone Comparison: HTC Radar versus Sony Ericsson Xperia Ray
Smartphone Comparison: HTC Radar versus Sony Ericsson Xperia Ray - HTC Radar, the new HTC’s phone that runs Microsoft’s Windows Phone Mango was released about a month ago. This is one of the company’s devices, which come to the market with bringing the goodness of the latest update Windows Phone. Designed to be a good-looking device and slim body too, HTC Radar is now ready to compete with the other smartphones from the other company.

Let’s see the Radar’s preparation to conquer the smartphone market by comparing it with an Android running device released by Sony Ericsson, the Xperia Ray. So, let’s start comparing these two promising handsets.

1. Power Comparison between HTC Radar and Sony Ericsson Xperia Ray

HTC Radar comes to the market with bringing quite powerful specification. The device promises good performance through its Qualcomm Snapdragon chipset that consists of a 1GHz Scorpion CPU and Adreno 205 GPU. Apart from that, there is also the 512MB RAM to support the processor. Actually, it would be nice if the company decided to put a bigger size of RAM, instead of planting this standard size.

Compared to the competitor, the Sony Ericsson Xperia Ray has pretty similar chipset to the HTC’s handset. It also has been powered by a 1GHz Scorpion processor, the same Adreno 205 GPU and also the same size of RAM rated at 512MB. By running on identical specification, Sony Ericsson Xperia Ray now is considered as the average phone on the market along with the Radar.

Apart from offering those specifications, both HTC Radar and Sony Ericsson Xperia Ray also provide internal storage to accommodate the users need in memory. While the Radar only offers an 8 GB of internal storage without a support from any type of external memory, in the other hand Sony Ericsson Xperia Ray offers less internal memory support rated at 1GB but it provides an extension for up to 32GB through memory card.

At this level, we cannot decide which phone comes out as the winner as both of them are seemed on equal footing.

2. Form and Build Comparison between HTC Radar and Sony Ericsson Xperia Ray

HTC Radar comes out to the surface with 120.5 x 61.5 x 10.9 mm of measurement and 137 g of weight. In term of design, it looks quite beautiful but will not win any contest in term of appearance, as this kind of design is easily forgettable.

HTC Radar appears just like the other HTC devices that are released recently. It appears with minimalist lines, a neat black and grey chassis made of plastics and metal. There is no hardware keys but one on the top that comes as the power switch.

In the meantime, Sony Ericsson Xperia Ray comes with 111 x 53 x 9.4 mm of measurement and 100 g of weight. The device appears just like the other Sony Ericsson’s plastic fantastic Xperia series that is hardly to find any specific distinguish between this one with the other.

This thin device offers a curved back design and clumsily designed key at front. Sony Ericsson Xperia Ray is looked pretty much like a lightweight fighter who shows light punch and awful defence as it seems to leave the aesthetic part behind and lack of metallic touch elements in the construction too.

As for this round, the HTC Radar comes as the winner.

3. Display Comparison between HTC Radar and Sony Ericsson Xperia Ray

For the display comparison against the Xperia Ray, HTC has equipped their Radar with average specifications of screen that are including a 3.8-inch S-LCD screen which operates at a resolution of 480 x 800 and offers up a pixel density of 246ppi. The Corning’s Gorilla Glass protects HTC Radar’s display, so the users will never worry about scratch or damage caused by the general abuse.

In this section, Sony Ericsson Xperia Ray tries to defend the pride with offering a 3.3-inch LED-backlit LCD display which runs at a resolution of 480 x 854 and offers up 297ppi of pixel density. By having this specification, the display seems to be a more pleasing stuff than the Radar’s. However, it could be a weaker side compared to the competitor, as the Gorilla Glass has not toughened it.

The trophy of the display battle belongs to the Sony Ericsson Xperia Ray since it offers better specifications than the HTC Radar’s display specification.

4. Software Comparison between HTC Radar and Sony Ericsson Xperia Ray

Now we have arrived on the section where we can see what is going to be featured by the device.

HTC Radar is Microsoft’s Windows Phone 7.5 Mango running device and becomes one of the firs devices that run this latest update of Microsoft’s Windows Phone.

Just like what the other new updates usually bring to the device, the Mango update also includes some smart new features such as unified inbox, upgraded social network integration, Silverlight 4 and updated browser, the new Internet Explorer 9.

The platform reportedly performs in very user-friendly manner just like the previous version does. Apart from that, Microsoft also has expanded the UI for more customisation features.

Sony Ericsson Xperia Ray comes with bringing the goodness of Google’s operating system, Android 2.3.4 Gingerbread. As we already know about this operating system, it offers a solid security, so many applications and games that most of them are free download, and also widgets that allow you to keep up to date with the information and applications that matter to you.

Sony Ericsson Xperia Ray also offers the company’s own TimeScape UI to wrap the device’s operating system. It triggers to the device to perform some much needed eye-candy and an updated social networking stuff in a neat timeline driven UI.

We count it as draw since it is a matter of personal taste. Both Windows Phone 7.5 Mango and Android 2.3.4 offer their abilities in their own way. So, for once more we have another draw result here.

5. Final Result of Comparison between HTC Radar and Sony Ericsson Xperia Ray

HTC Radar is one of first Windows Phone Mango running devices. It is actually a decent device with newly released update operating system, but what has become the obstacle to the device to shine is the Radar’s specifications that quite out-of-date.

In the meantime, Sony Ericsson Xperia Ray that is coming out to the surface as an Android running device has successfully overcome the Radar’s fight. On some sections of comparison, Sony Ericsson Xperia Ray has managed to show that it could be the real contender for the other mid-range Android smartphones.
